    Hello Wagner Ranch Families,

Last year brought much success to Wagner Ranch. We started the year off being greeted by excellent results from our spring CAASPP Testing. Scores for Wagner Ranch, along with the other three elementary schools in Orinda, are among the absolute highest in the State, and Wagner students scored at or near the top when compared to their peers throughout the district. Shortly thereafter we were honored to receive the Distinguished School Award based on the strength of our science program.

In addition to a strong academic program, we ushered in school-wide Kidpower instruction which is meant to empower students, parents, and teachers by using a strengths-based approach to create a culture of safety. To enhance school culture we engaged heavily in  International Kindness Day by having our own Kindness week and participating in the global effort through Dance for Kindness.

Our primary playground got a major renovation with the addition of new play apparatus and poured rubber matting. We enhanced emergency preparedness with the installation of numerous security cameras, mirrored appliques on exterior door windows, and devices that allow doors to remain in a locked position while still enabling easy access to rooms during day to day operations. We also purchased additional walkie talkies to facilitate communication both in support of at risk students and to deal with emergency situations.

In the coming year we will continue our focus on providing an even stronger, more comprehensive instructional program. As we move deeper into implementing Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), greater cohesion of instruction through a tightening of our scope and sequence, enhancing students’ proficiency with science journals, and providing more engaging, purposeful investigations will guide our efforts. We will continue to fine tune our writing and reading programs and bring greater alignment to math instruction both within and between grade levels.

Last spring, in a joint venture between The Orinda Union School District and our Parents’ Clubs, a STEAM and Innovation teacher was hired to support our schools in a quest to provide more hands on, project based learning for our students. I anticipate that this year at WR we will be investing substantial resources toward creating a STEAM lab that will provide the venue for this exciting curriculum.

In adherence with our motto “A Place for Everybody”, we will continue to strengthen our culture of inclusivity, mutual respect, and student empowerment. We will be aligning our efforts with the district’s character education initiative entitled, “What We Do Matters”. To this end, we will continue to provide KidPower, Think First, and Second Steps educational programs, and we will work to expand the influence of these, especially KidPower, beyond the walls of the classroom. In conjunction with our student council, we will create more opportunities for upper grade students to serve in leadership roles both with younger students and with students who have significant special needs. We will enhance our Abilities Awareness education to provide students a greater understanding of the unique strengths and challenges that each of us faces. Finally, OUSD in conjunction with our Parents’ Clubs, will be sponsoring counselors at each of the elementary schools to work with students who are experiencing social or emotional challenges.

I am proud to lead a school at which we have such a talented, dedicated, well trained, compassionate staff, a parent community that gives generously of its time, talent, and treasure, and students who bring us their best every day!

I look forward to an exciting, engaging, and fulfilling year for all of us!

    Warm regards,

    Jim Manheimer, Principal

    About Our School
    Mission Statement

The mission of Wagner Ranch Elementary School, in partnership with our staff, families and community, is to inspire each child through educational excellence, diverse enrichment experiences and mutual respect, to a lifetime of learning and the creation of a better world.

Wagner Ranch School is committed to inspiring our students to academic excellence within a community that fosters respect, honesty, responsibility, self-discipline, compassion, and a positive attitude. Our goal is to prepare our students with the vital knowledge and skills they need for success while at the same time encouraging creativity, curiosity, and a lifelong love of learning.

Our supportive parent community is invaluable. High parent involvement, school to home communications, and support for our enriched curriculum creates a powerful partnership at Wagner Ranch. Working together, we strive to offer the best academic and social-emotional support for the children we share. Parents provide vital support at home, with homework and reading nightly. We welcome parents to become involved through our active Parents' Club, as classroom volunteers, and through our many Family Fun events throughout the year.
